Architect Paul Blasco started his architecture studies in 2003 at the University of the Philippines - Diliman. By 2008, he graduated as one of the best undergraduate theses which made him a recipient of the Philip Recto Design Excellence Award. The following year, he represented the college in Archiprix International which is a competition of the world’s best design graduation projects.
After graduation, he took his apprenticeship at F. L. Santaromana Designs and Ecotektonika Inc. This initial exposure gave him the basics of architecture practice.
By 2011, he then worked for the firm of National Artist Leandro V. Locsin, an internationally acclaimed architecture firm with a strong legacy in Philippine architecture history. His exposure to the firm’s high-end residential and hospitality projects has helped refine his design philosophy and his approach to contemporary architecture.
During this period, Paul Blasco has also been involved in several initiatives that promote Philippine architecture and its discourse. Among which are: the co-founding of Arkitekturang Filipino Online - A Database of Philippine Architecture, and the co-founding of the informal group Disenyo which led to Disenyo Dialogues which is a series of talks in Manila and Cebu that promote the exchange of ideas between young designers.
This was also the time when he travelled to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Singapore. These experiences enriched his appreciation for Southeast Asia’s rich architectural heritage and design language.
In 2014, while based in Cebu, Paul Blasco has worked for the Singapore architecture firm, A+P GRP. He worked on large scale developments such as Bai Hotel Cebu and a 2-tower, 19-storey mixed-use building in Myanmar among others. These exposures gave him the experiences to tackle hospitality developments later in his own company.
Since graduation, Paul Blasco has also been involved in several design competitions that challenge the status quo. This culminated with his finalist entry to AVID 2014, The Carve, that questions the design of museums and buildings, in general. Since then, he has stopped participating in conceptual competitions and dedicated all his efforts in establishing his own company and designing real-world projects.
With a comprehensive understanding of the architecture practice, Paul Blasco established Blasco Architects in 2015. The firm, based then in Iligan, started its first year with a 400sqm restaurant, a 5-storey office building, and a 600sqm upscale residence. These initial projects eventually paved way for more projects in various scales, from restaurants, residences, apartments, to commercial buildings, office buildings, resorts, and shopping malls. Within three years since its inception, the firm landed the interior renovation design of Gaisano Iligan, and the interior designs of Gaisano Tubod and Valencia.
The outset of the COVID-19 pandemic unfortunately put on hold most of the firm’s projects, while some were even permanently cancelled. Paul Blasco’s planned expansion to Cagayan de Oro, which at this time was where most of his projects were located, was also cancelled.
With very minimal work, Paul Blasco diverted his focus in streamlining the company processes and defining clear goals for the company. It was a difficult time for the firm but one that proved beneficial in the succeeding years.
Resumed operations and recovered.
Since most projects were in the more bustling city of Cagayan de Oro, eventually transferred residency and office there.
After a long introspection during the pandemic, decided to focus on what he loves most, which was residential and hospitality projects.
